Bekon for Professionals

The story is narrated by an unnamed male protagonist. He lives with his wife, Nora, in an apartment in the city. Though they appear to have a comfortable middle-class existence, the protagonist feels a sense of dissatisfaction and boredom with his life. He works a dull, unrewarding office job that he hates.

One day, the protagonist receives a mysterious envelope in the mail. Inside is a strange, disturbing photograph of a completely unfamiliar woman. The photograph unsettles him, and he becomes increasingly preoccupied with trying to figure out its meaning and origin. He shows the photo to Nora, but she is unable to provide any insight.

As the protagonist becomes more obsessed with the photograph, his relationship with Nora begins to suffer. He becomes distant and withdrawn, spending more and more time alone trying to unravel the mystery. Nora grows concerned about his behavior and the effect it is having on their marriage.

When he arrives at her house, the woman answers the door, and the protagonist is shocked to realize that she is an exact duplicate of Nora, down to the smallest detail.

The woman invites the protagonist inside, and they have a lengthy, unsettling conversation. She reveals that she is also married to a man who is an exact duplicate of the protagonist. The two couples, it turns out, are doppelgangers - identical pairs living parallel lives in separate realities.

The revelation of this startling information leaves the protagonist deeply disturbed. He flees the woman's house, hurrying back to his own apartment, where he finds Nora waiting for him. In the final scene, the protagonist sits silently with Nora, grappling with the unsettling implications of what he has discovered about the nature of reality and his own identity.

The story explores themes of existential dread, the nature of identity, and the human need to find meaning in an often bewildering and seemingly random world.
